The West Side Ghost Run

Seven haunted stops from Central Park West to Grant's Tomb: a Ghostbusters tower, the building from Rosemary's Baby, a Titanic memorial, an unfinished cathedral and the last building of an old asylum. Pick your pace and start time and the page works out your timing, with every stop checked against its opening hours.

Set your pace

Everything below recalculates as you move the sliders. The default is an easy 10:00/mile with 4 minutes at each stop for photos and reading plaques.

Stop times are spent before moving on to the next stop. Opening hours were pulled from Google Places in October 2026; confirm before you go, especially for the Cathedral and Grant's Tomb.

The route

An illustrated map of the route. Each stop shows the time you will reach it, and it updates when you change your start time. Use the Google Maps button for turn-by-turn street directions.

The seven stops

DOCUMENTED marks the historical record. LEGEND marks ghost stories and folklore, which we are happy to repeat but cannot vouch for.

Worth a detour

One Halloween tradition on the route and one stop just off it.

Halloween Extravaganza at the Cathedral

Annual · check stjohndivine.org for 2026 dates

The Cathedral of St. John the Divine has long marked Halloween with a silent horror film and live organ, followed by costumed creatures in the nave. In 2017 it was The Phantom of the Opera (1925). I couldn't find 2026 dates, so confirm them before you plan around it.

Central Park, across from the Dakota

Optional detour · about 0.2 miles

Strawberry Fields is directly across Central Park West from the Dakota's entrance. If you have more time, Cleopatra's Needle, a roughly 3,500-year-old obelisk, stands behind the Metropolitan Museum on the park's east side.
